Skyrora essay competition

On Wednesday the 7th of July, Skyrora will be hosting an anniversary event to mark the 50th year since the Black Arrow R3 rocket launched the Prospero satellite was launched into low Earth orbit.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the in-person capacity of the event will be limited. For your chance to grab two tickets to attend this event, Skyrora are hosting an essay competition on the topic of space sustainability.

The essays should be between 600 and 1,000 words and must be your own original work. Essays may be in any style (thesis or prose, academic or literary), but should show originality and flair - write about something that interests you.

The essays must be sent to [email protected] with the subject heading ‘Essay on Space Sustainability’ by 12 Noon on Friday the 2nd of July. The winner will be announced by the end of the same day, and the winning essay will also appear on the Skyrora website!

COMPETITION TERMS & PRIVACY NOTICE

1. About this competition

1.1 This essay competition is managed by Skyrora Limited of 108 Princes Street, Floor 2, Edinburgh, Scotland, EH2 3AA (“Company”).

1.2 No purchase is necessary to enter this competition.
1.3 On Wednesday the 7th of July (subject to COVID-19 restrictions), the Company will be hosting an anniversary event to mark the 50th year since the Black Arrow R3 rocket launched the Prospero satellite into low Earth orbit. As a part of this event, the Company is running this essay writing competition, on the topic of space sustainability, with a prize of two tickets to the event itself, subject to these terms and conditions.
1.4 There will be one (1) winner.

2. Acceptance of these terms and conditions

2.1 By submitting a competition entry, you are agreeing to be bound by these terms and conditions.

3. Important dates for entering

3.1 The competition will run from 10am GMT on Friday 25th of June (the “Opening Date“) to 12 noon GMT on Friday 2nd of July (the “Closing Date“) inclusive.

3.2 All competition entries must be received by the Company no later than 12 noon on the Closing Date. All competition entries received after the Closing Date are automatically disqualified. The Company does not accept any responsibility for competition entries that are lost, mislaid, damaged or delayed, regardless of cause, including, for example, as a result of any equipment failure, technical malfunction, systems, satellite, network, server, computer hardware or software failure of any kind; or proof of transmission as proof of receipt of entry to the competition.

4. How to enter  

4.1 To enter the competition:
(a) Write an essay, in any style (thesis or prose, academic or literary), on the topic of Space Sustainability, which should be between 600 and 1,000 words, and must be your own original work (“Essay”)

(b) All entries should be submitted by emailing your Essay as a word document or PDF, to [email protected] with the subject “Essay Competition”.

(c) Your email should include your name, a contact telephone number, and the town in which you live.
(d) Emails with attachments must be submitted by the Closing Date in order to be considered valid.

5. Eligibility

5.1 The competition is open to residents of the UK aged 18 and over at time of entry, except employees of the Company or its holding or subsidiary companies, or any person who is professionally connected with the competition or its administration; or any immediate family member of any of the foregoing.

5.2 In entering the competition, you confirm that you are eligible to do so and eligible to claim the prize. The Company may require you to provide proof that you are eligible to enter the competition.
5.3 There is a limit of one entry per person. Entries on behalf of another person will not be accepted and joint submissions are not allowed.
5.4 The Company reserves all rights to disqualify you if your conduct is contrary to the spirit or intention of the prize competition or, if the Company has any reason to believe that there has been a breach of these terms and conditions, the Company may, at its sole discretion, reserve the right to exclude you from participating in the competition.


6. Prize

6.1 The winner will receive two tickets to the Black Arrow anniversary event hosted by the Company on Wednesday 7th July at 6.20pm at the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust (Fast) Museum (“Event”).
6.2 The prize does not include travel or accommodation arrangements. Any other costs incurred in addition to those set out above and that are incidental to the fulfilment of the prize are the responsibility of the winner and their guest.
6.3 Prizes are subject to availability. There is no cash alternative for the prize.
6.4 One ticket must be used by the winner, with the second ticket being used by a guest of their choice who must be a UK resident aged 18 or over.
6.5 All attendees at the Event including the winner and guest may be subject to security checks upon entry such as bag checks. Winner agrees that winner and guest will adhere to any Company or venue policies and procedures made known to the winner and guest in respect of the event including any health and safety policies.
6.6 The Event may be rescheduled due to COVID-19 restrictions as set out by the Government of the UK at the relevant time. Neither the winner or their guest should attend the Event if any symptoms of Covid-19 are displayed (high temperature, new or continuous cough, and/or loss of taste or smell), or if winner or guest has been told to self-isolate by any health or governmental authority.
6.7 Track and trace may be in operation at the Event and all attendees including the winner and guest must comply with all reasonable requirements of the Company.
6.8 Winner will be offered two (2) tickets for the Event if it is rescheduled to a later date.
6.9 The Company does not accept any responsibility if the winner is not able to accept the prize for the Event (whether on the scheduled or rescheduled date(s)).

7. Winner selection

7.1 The Skyrora business team will review all valid entries and decide the winning essay entry.
7.2 The decision of the Skyrora business team is final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.

8. Notifying the winner and claiming the prize

8.1 The winner will be notified within five (5) days of the Closing Date, directly via email and/or telephone using the telephone number or email address provided with the entry.
8.2 Unsuccessful entrants will not be contacted.
8.3 The prize may not be claimed by a third party on behalf of the winner and the prize is exclusive to the winner, it is non-transferable.
8.4 The Company will make all reasonable efforts to contact the winner. If the winner cannot be contacted or is not available or has not claimed their prize within ten (10) days of the Closing Date (following the notification of the Company to the winner), the Company reserves the right to offer the prize to the next eligible entrant selected from the valid entries that were received before the Closing Date.

9. Announcing the winner

9.1 The winner’s name and the winning Essay will be announced and published on the Company’s website and/or social media channels no later than ten (10) days following the Closing Date. The winner may be asked for consent to use their photograph for purposes of this announcement.

9.2 If you object to any or all of your name and winning entry being published or made available, please contact the Company at [email protected]. In such circumstances, the Company must still provide the information and winning entry to the Advertising Standards Authority on request. 

10. Force Majeure and Covid-19  

The Company shall not be in breach of these terms and conditions nor liable for failure to perform any of its obligations under these terms and conditions if such failure results from events, circumstances or causes beyond its reasonable control. For the avoidance of doubt, an epidemic or pandemic constitutes a force majeure event. The Company shall not be liable for any costs incurred by a winner should the Event be cancelled or rescheduled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

11. Limitation of liability

Insofar as is permitted by law, the Company, its agents or distributors will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate the winner or accept any liability for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring as a result of taking up the prize except where it is caused by the negligence of the Company, its agents or distributors or that of their employees. Your statutory rights are not affected.

12. Ownership of competition entries and intellectual property rights  

12.1 You warrant that your Essay is entirely your own work and does not infringe in any way on intellectual property rights of any third party (unless you can demonstrate permission from the person owning the rights). You further agree to indemnify the Company, its shareholders, officers, employees and agents (“Indemnified Parties”) against any and all losses and expenses incurred in the event that any of the Indemnified Parties become subject to any legal action in any jurisdiction through its use of your Essay under the licence granted at clause 12.2.
12.2 The Company does not claim any rights of ownership in your Essay and you retain all copyright in your Essay, however when submitting your entry you are granting the Company a perpetual, royalty free, non-exclusive, worldwide, irrevocable licence to use, display, publish, transmit, copy, edit, alter, store, re-format and sub-licence the Essay for its own commercial purposes including but not limited to publishing your Essay on the Company’s website, social media pages or any other media.

13. Data protection and publicity

13.1 When you enter this competition, your personal data will be controlled by Skyrora Limited, 108 Princes Street, Edinburgh EH2 3AA, as ‘data controller’.
13.2 ‘Personal Data’: we may collect, use, store and transfer different kinds of Personal Data about you as follows:

  • Identity Data (including first name, last name, town of residence, photographs).

  • Contact Data (including email address(es) and telephone number(s)).

13.3 Your Personal Data will be collected by us through your direct interactions with us including submitting your entry by email, discussions by telephone, or throughout the competition judging period, and leading up to/during the Event.
13.4 We will only use your personal data for the purpose for which we collected it which is to enable you to participate in this competition and to allow us to administer the competition and manage the Event.
13.5 The legal basis for processing your Personal Data is that processing is necessary to allow you to enter the competition (performance of a contract legal basis), and to meet any legal obligations or requirements applicable to the competition (legal obligation legal basis).
13.6 Your Personal Data will be shared with (i) third parties who assist in administering the competition and/or the Event including the venue, (ii) any local authority, governmental body or authority, health authority or law enforcement authority or other such public authority as necessary and upon valid legal request by that party for purposes of health and security.
13.7 Your Personal Data will not be shared or used by us or any third party for purposes of marketing goods or services to you.
13.8 It is necessary to publish the winner’s name to fulfil the legal requirements of this competition.
13.9 Your Personal Data will be stored for as long as necessary to administer the competition, and no longer than 1 month after the Event. If you are the winner, your personal data may be stored for as long as we are exercising our rights under the licence granted in clause 12.2.

13.10 Under certain circumstances, you have rights under data protection laws in relation to your personal data including the right to receive a copy of the personal data we hold about you, the right to request erasure of your data, the right to have your data provided in an easily readable format, and the right to make updates to the data we hold about you. To exercise any of your rights, please submit your request to [email protected] Note that we will not charge a fee (unless there are excessive requests), and we must respond to certain requests within 30 days. We may require identification documents from you to verify your identity prior to fulfilling your request, which will be deleted immediately following verification of your identity and used for no other purpose.

13.11You have the right to make a complaint at any time to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK regulator for data protection issues (www.ico.org.uk).

14. General

14.1 The Company reserves the right to hold void, suspend, cancel, or amend the prize competition where it becomes necessary to do so.
14.2 These terms and conditions shall be governed by Scots law, and the parties submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Scotland.
